The future of a fad

생각이라는 말벌/2010년대

About ten years ago, I said to my cousin to add my homepage to his favorites showing him it. It was not long after I made my website, and so it just had poor content, but I thought he would add it readily; because he was my cousin! Do I need another reason? But contrary to my expectation he didn't. He said, "why should I do it? There are nothing to read." Yeah, it was true. Kinship didn't solve the problem of poor contents.

In the years since, Cyworld, a South Korean SNS, launched in 1999, became widly popular Service in my home. In its heyday, 25 percent of South Korean used this service. It's an astonishing figure. But I hardly ever do Cyworld because I thought that service wouldn't prevail long; it didn't fit for a long piece of writing structurally, and focused more on a user's photos and a simple sentence mainly consisting of gossip. In the end, many people began to get fed up with similar photos taken from restaurants, urban areas, or main drags with simple words. People started thinking about "why am I now watching these photos just blowing their own horn?" Besides, many users of this site weren't interested in writing, even keeping their Cyworld.  I said kinship didn't solve the problem of poor contents. That's it. There were many friends of theirs in their Cyworld, but those things had gone away, instantly.

Now, there is Facebook. When I saw this first, I immediately thought the new fad came; it was also mainly being operated by friends' photos and didn't seem to be a suitable place to write a long letter. That meant that Facebook is also unattractive for someone who wants a thoughtful essay, don't like writing something, and don't have time to keep it. Because all the contents we would read at Cyworld was produced by users, (I mean, us) when we stopped to make the content, there was nothing to read. And so I thought the same goes for Facebook. It would become second Cyworld, and be forgotten.

But there were some differences, and more than all I took a note of a smart phone. The interworking of a smart phone could make Facebook's comment like MMS, (It let us know when messages come) and so could give us reasons we'd better connect Facebook as often as possible. It broadcasts our status or photos in real time, and so we could instalntly check the news of our friends and instantly write our status regardless of t ime and place. It was so convenient. So now I'm using Facebook and having fun. But it still has a limit like that if no one of my friends in Facebook doesn't write anything, there's nothing to read, and then there's no reason to visit there, and I'll see how much it will be changed in the future.
